DeadEasy - Voltage Indicator

DeadEasy - Electrical Isolation, "Test for Dead" Voltage Indicator

DeadEasy is a 3 phase, “Test for Dead” test device.  DeadEasy tests a circuit to establish whether the AC phase conductors are energised or deenergised (alive or dead).  DeadEasy aims to provide non-electrical people with a simple and safe method of verifying MCC (Motor Control Centre) based, electrical isolations before conducting mechanical maintenance.  See SwitChek for field isolation verification.  In addition, confirmation of the deenergised state of the circuit inside a cabinet reduces the need to open the cabinet to conduct testing and hence expose personnel to a potential Arc Flash / Fault.  Confirmation of the deenergised state of the circuit inside the cabinet may reduce the level of Arc Flash PPE required to open the cabinet door.

It is simple and fast to use. No licenses are necessary. Anyone can operate DeadEasy.

DeadEasy tests the circuit under test by sensing the existence or absense of an electric field surrounding an electrical conductor.  In essence, DeadEasy is a permanently installed, non-contact voltage indicator.  While this testing aproach is used extensively in medium and high voltage applications, DeadEasy's focus is low voltage (< 1,000VAC) systems.  DeadEasy is implemented in a fixed mode, that is one DeadEasy is dedicated to one circuit.  It is ideally suited to installation within a motor control centre on controlled circuits.  Specifically, on the short length, circuit conductors between the isolating device (switch or circuit breaker) and the controlling device (contactor or variable speed drive).

The DeadEasy non-contact voltage detector is operated as follows:
  1. With the Isolator on / closed / 1 the red LED only should be illuminated - Confirms that all 3 phases are energised
  2. With the Isolator off / opened / 0 the green LED only should be illuminated - Confirms that all 3 phases are deenergised
  3. With the Isolator off / opened / 0 and self test activated the red LED only should be illuminated - Confirms that 3 phase voltage sensing is operational and therefore validates the deenergised result achieved in step 2 above.

DeadEasy Benefits

Users have commented that the DeadEasy non-contact voltage tester:
  • Allows non-electricians to perform a "Test for Dead" style test on an electrical circuit.
  • Is simple to use.
  • Provides a positive result in dirty and dark environments. Green LED On = Isolated. Whereas “Pilot Lamp“ solution Off = Isolated or just lamp failure? = Inconclusive!
  • Delivers test result confidence through an operator initiated Self Testing function.
  • Does not compromise the integrity of the power system as DeadEasy does not electrically connect to the power circuit.
  • Is inexpensive.
  • Is simple to install.  25mm wide DIN rail mount electronics, HMI incorporating LED lamps and self test request all in one only 22.5mm panel lamp cut-out.
  • Has wide application.  DeadEasy is suitable for new and retrofit installations and dusty, low and high ambient light environments.
  • Is flexible.  DeadEasy allows subsequent verifications without reversal of the isolation ie accommodates late working parties.
  • Reduces exposure to arc flash / faults.  The energised state of conductors is known before panel doors are opened to conduct tests.
  • Is reliable when compared to hand held, non-contact voltage testers.  It does not depend on the user's low impedance to earth.

What is Isolation Confirmation?

Electrical Isolation Procedures / Lockout Tagout (LOTO) Procedures often require that electrical switches be tested so as to confirm that the switch is "electrically off" once the equipment has been isolated. Confirmation or verification is often performed on the following isolating equipment:
  • Isolation Switches
  • Disconnects
  • Circuit Breakers (CBs)
Typical Isolation Procedure testing methods include:
  • Testing Dead or Test for Dead
  • Attempt Start
  • Observation of Visual Break Isolators (VBIs)
  • Pilot lamp indication of energised phases

In many cases these isolation verification methods are complex, potentially misleading and expensive to perform.

DeadEasy exposes unsafe electrical isolations by detecting a failed isolation switch.

IsolationPoint, a new isolation / lockout tagout, procedure management system is now available from Redbusbar Pty Ltd.

IsolationPoint is different because it provides:
  • High accuracy isolation procedures - Isolation point secondary identification.  Uses human and machine methods ( barcode / RFID scanning ) to independently identify and provide identity verification of the isolation point to be operated.  In essence, it provides cross checking with only one Isolation Officer!
  • Low administration overhead yielding reduced costs - Procedure self auditing, automatic archiving, who executed which plan and when, average time to execute and lock and tag lists, are incorporated to reduce administrative overhead while providing useful information to aid future maintenance / shutdown isolation planning.
IsolationPoint manages all phases of an isolation procedure's lifecycle.  Put simply, it manages the development, execution, archiving and reporting of safety isolation procedures.

The system was conceived and developed by the engineers at Redbusbar over a period of 2 years.  It has undergone a rigorous design and testing phase incorporating forced error, function and performance trials.

IsolationPoint is being released this week at the Western Mining Electrical Association conference, Salt Lake City, USA.  Next week it will be demonstrated at the Mining Electrical Safety Conference, Brisbane, Australia.
