New Product Release - IsolationPoint - Isolation Procedure Management System

IsolationPoint, a new isolation / lockout tagout, procedure management system is now available from Redbusbar Pty Ltd.

IsolationPoint is different because it provides:
  • High accuracy isolation procedures - Isolation point secondary identification.  Uses human and machine methods ( barcode / RFID scanning ) to independently identify and provide identity verification of the isolation point to be operated.  In essence, it provides cross checking with only one Isolation Officer!
  • Low administration overhead yielding reduced costs - Procedure self auditing, automatic archiving, who executed which plan and when, average time to execute and lock and tag lists, are incorporated to reduce administrative overhead while providing useful information to aid future maintenance / shutdown isolation planning.
IsolationPoint manages all phases of an isolation procedure's lifecycle.  Put simply, it manages the development, execution, archiving and reporting of safety isolation procedures.

The system was conceived and developed by the engineers at Redbusbar over a period of 2 years.  It has undergone a rigorous design and testing phase incorporating forced error, function and performance trials.

IsolationPoint is being released this week at the Western Mining Electrical Association conference, Salt Lake City, USA.  Next week it will be demonstrated at the Mining Electrical Safety Conference, Brisbane, Australia.

Electrical Isolation Verification in the USA

I received this email recently from our new customer Mr Chuck Oberfield from Dow Chemicals in Ohio, USA.  It describes the problem of isolation verification really well, much better than I ever could...

Hello Chris,

Thanks for the quick preparation on my order!  I heard about your products via the internet.  We have equipment at this Dow site that we cannot isolate in our normal manner.  i.e. Force it on manually, force it off, isolate power, then attempt to force it on manually again. I was given the task of identifying a way to give us nearly 100% proof of electrical isolation. I found several isolating device monitors, but none that would indicate a failed or faulty 3 phase disconnect. It certainly seems that the "Dead Easy" device may give us this indication.  We still cannot guarantee proper isolation, due to the fact that many of these panels are located some distance from the equipment being powered, but with this installed, we will hopefully know that the disconnect being locked out is truly de-energized.

I have considered indicator lights at the motor or equipment to be isolated to prove that the proper isolation point has been utilized, but that is no quick and easy task. Have you any thoughts on this?

I look forward to running the Dead Easy equipment on the bench, and possibly sharing this technology with other Dow sites.

Thanks

Chuck Oberfield

Mr Oberfield thank you for considering DeadEasy as a possible answer to your problem.

Your application sounds like a typical application where DeadEasy is used.  The current method that you are referring to for proof of isolation is called an “Attempt Start” method here in Australia.  Many companies use this approach but there are quite a few that are concerned about its value.  The main criticism is the possibility of a control circuit fault yielding a “confirmed isolation” when in fact the power circuit may not be isolated.  Another issue is the manual running of drives.  It is not always convenient due to the presence of material eg conveyors or lack of material eg pumps.  Of course the method does not work for jammed screw feeders and conveyors as nothing moves when you force the drive on.  All of these “problem scenarios” are particularly difficult to train workers for.  As a result some companies are looking for alternatives.

The use of indicator lights seems simple enough at first.    However, DeadEasy was developed to address all the problems that indicator lights do not address or even worse, introduce.  DeadEasy incorporates a true self test function that tests not only the lights but the wiring connecting the lights to the power connections.  DeadEasy provides a “positive” result ie when the power goes off the green LED turns on.  DeadEasy does not electrically connect to the power system.  Therefore it does not weaken the integrity of the power system to accommodate surge voltages or lamp failure.  DeadEasy only incorporates one lamp for all three phases thus simplifying its usage.  DeadEasy is super bright and is good for both high and low light conditions.  There are more reasons but you probably have stopped reading by now so I’ll finish up.

Good luck with your trial and I hope to write again soon.

Kind Regards,

Chris Devine

Electrical Isolation Verification - DeadEasy

DeadEasy, a 3 phase, “Test for Dead” test device is now available.  DeadEasy provides non-electrical people with a simple and safe method of verifying MCC (Motor Control Centre) based, electrical isolations.

The test device was conceived and developed by the engineers at Redbusbar over a period of 12 months.  It has undergone rigorous design, Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), laboratory alpha testing and multi-site beta testing.  Site installation and testing was conducted by engineers at the following sites:

  • Xstrata Coal - Abbot Point Bulkcoal
  • Rio Tinto Alcan - Weipa
  • North Queensland Metals - Pajingo Gold Mine
  • Consolidated Rutile Limited - Pinkenba Dry Plant
  • Newlands Coal - Xstrata - Newlands Coal Handling Prep Plant
  • BMA Coal - Hay Point Coal Terminal

These sites were chosen from a field of applicants as they:

  • Are committed to electrical safety
  • Recognise that electrician performed, attempt a start and phase lamp confirmation of  isolation methods were time consuming or unreliable, or both
  • Utilise a diverse range of circuits (11kW DOLs to 355kW VSDs) for which DeadEasy could be put through its paces
  • Could conduct multiple test isolations during the beta testing period

Thanks to our beta test site partners, we are pleased to introduce a site optimised product that enhances safety and boosts efficiency.
